Black Friday and holiday emails for clothing boutiques
A boutique sells a handful of each style, in sizes that run out. That changes how a holiday sale should be written. You are not clearing a warehouse; you are telling regulars which pieces are left, in which sizes, and what to wear to the party.
Decide what is on sale and what is not
Most boutiques carry two kinds of stock at once: this season’s new arrivals and older pieces that have been waiting. Treat them differently in your emails. Markdowns belong to the older stock. New arrivals, especially the dresses, knits and coats people want for the holidays, are usually better left at full price, or offered with a smaller perk such as a free gift or early access.
Whatever you choose, write it down in one sentence before you start: “Fall styles are 30% off; new arrivals are included in the gift card bonus only.” If you can say it in one sentence, your customers can understand it in one glance.
Be honest about sizes
With small runs, sizes disappear. Say so plainly: “Mostly mediums and larges left.” Linking to a collection filtered by size is more useful than a general sale page. If you take returns, state the policy for sale items in the email, since many shops change it for the holidays. Add a short size and fit note to each featured piece, such as what size the model wears, or whether it runs small. Do not promise a fit you cannot back up.
Early access for your best customers
Your repeat customers are the reason the doors stay open. Give them a reason to feel that. A VIP early-access email, sent the Tuesday or Wednesday before Black Friday, gives your list first pick of sizes before the sale opens to everyone. Say exactly when it starts and ends, and where to find the link. A plain note works fine: “You’re getting this a day early because you’re one of our regulars.”
Gift cards
A boutique gift card is the answer to “I don’t know her size.” Mention it in at least two of your emails, with the plain facts: the amounts, whether it is a digital or a printed card, and how fast it arrives. A bonus card, such as a small card with a larger purchase, works well, but only if you have decided what the bonus costs you.
The five emails
- VIP early access (Tuesday or Wednesday before Black Friday). A short note to your list: when it starts, what is included, and the new arrivals that are staying at full price.
- Black Friday: the markdowns. One clear offer and a few pieces to start with. Name the sizes left in your most-loved items. Send a short reminder that evening.
- Small Business Saturday: the people behind the boutique. Your story, a photo of the shop, and an invitation to come in for a try-on and a warm drink. Examples.
- Cyber Monday: last chance and the sizes that remain. The final day of the offer, what has sold out, and what is still available online.
- Holiday outfit email (early December). Build three complete looks for a party, a dinner and a family day: top, bottom, shoes, a piece of jewelry. Link every item. Finish with the last day to order for delivery before Christmas and your gift card option. Last-day template.
What to put in a boutique’s emails
- Photos on real people, in your own shop, and a second photo of the back or a detail.
- Sizes and fit, in the email itself rather than only on the product page.
- Fabric and care, a short line such as “wool blend, dry clean only.”
- Return and exchange terms, stated simply, especially for sale items.
- The shop’s own voice, not a catalog’s. Write the way you talk when a customer is in the fitting room.
