Black Friday and holiday emails for outdoor, bike and sporting goods stores
Your customers do not buy gear once. They buy it for a season, a trip, a sport their kid just started. An independent outdoor shop wins on knowledge, fitting and service, and your holiday emails should say that before they say anything about price.
Lead with the season
By late November your customers are thinking about winter. Skiers want boots and skis tuned, runners want cold-weather layers, cyclists want trainers and lights, hikers want a warm jacket for the short days. Build your emails around what people will do in the next three months, not around a general “sale.” That way each message feels useful to the reader, and the offer feels like a bonus.
Gear bundles
Bundles are how a specialty shop avoids a race to the lowest price. A beginner’s ski setup, a bike commuting kit with lights, a lock and a rack, a base-layer set: each solves a problem for the buyer and lets you choose the margin. Name the bundle, list every piece, and give the price and the saving. Make clear that your staff can help with fitting and sizing, which no online giant can do.
Trade-ins and rentals
If you run a trade-in or consignment program, the holiday weeks are the time to mention it. Explain how it works in a few lines: what you accept, what condition it must be in, and whether you pay in cash or store credit. Do not promise a specific payout in advance; say that you assess each item in the shop. If you rent skis, boards, bikes, snowshoes or camping gear, a rental sale or a pre-booking discount gives you winter revenue and gets new people into the shop. State the dates, the prices, and how to reserve.
Gift cards and wish lists
Gear is a risky gift, because fit and model matter. A gift card is the safe answer, and your staff can help the buyer choose. You can also offer a wish list: a customer writes down the items they want and a partner or parent can come in to buy them. Mention both in your emails, with the amounts and how the card is delivered.
The five emails
- Winter prep and early access (the week before). What to do now: tune-ups, boot fittings, winter layers. Early access to the offers for your list.
- Black Friday: one clear offer. A percentage off a category, a gear bundle, or a gift with purchase. State the dates, and which brands are excluded if any.
- Small Business Saturday: come into the shop. Staff picks, a fitting session or a demo if you have one, and a warm drink. Invite local clubs and teams. Examples.
- Cyber Monday: bundles, trade-ins and rentals. Last day of the offer, the bundles, and how to book a rental for the season.
- Gift cards and last-day-to-ship (early to mid December). The last order date, in-store pickup options, and gift cards, delivered by email or in the shop. Last-day template.
What to put in a sporting goods store’s emails
- Staff names and a photo, so people know who will help them.
- Fit and sizing advice, and the offer to fit in the shop.
- Service dates, such as tune-up times, since lead times lengthen in winter.
- Real stock levels, if a popular size or model is running low.
- Warranty and return terms, in a sentence, especially for used or open-box items.
