Abandoned cart email for Black Friday weekend: timing and a template (2026)
Over Black Friday weekend, lots of people fill a cart and leave. A reminder email can bring some of them back, but the weekend changes the rules: the offer, the timing and the tone all need a second look. Here is how to handle it, with a short template. Black Friday is November 27, 2026.
First, check what you already have
Most email tools and store platforms can send an automatic abandoned cart email. Before the weekend, open yours and look at three things: whether it is switched on, how long it waits before sending, and what it says. Many default versions are generic and were written for a normal week. Some will also still mention a discount code that no longer applies, or ignore the sale you are running. We cannot tell you what your particular tool does by default, so read your own settings and send yourself a test.
Timing over the weekend
Typical cart reminders go out within a few hours of the person leaving, with a follow-up the next day. During a sale weekend, the second email matters more, because the sale has an end date. A sensible pattern:
- First reminder: a few hours after the cart is left. Plain and helpful.
- Second reminder: the next day, mentioning when the sale ends.
- Optional third: only on the final day, only if the sale is ending.
Do not send more than that. A person who left a cart on Friday and receives four reminders plus your regular campaigns will likely unsubscribe.
Should the reminder include a discount?
It depends on your margins and on whether your sale already applies. Some points to weigh:
- If your sitewide sale already covers the items in the cart, there is no need for an extra code. Just remind them it applies.
- Adding a second code on top of a sale can cut deeper than you meant. Check the math first.
- Offering a discount only to people who abandon teaches some customers to abandon on purpose. If that worries you, lead with help and the deadline instead.
We cannot say which approach converts better for your shop. Try the plainer version first if you are unsure, and look at your own numbers afterward.
Tone: helpful, not pushy
Phrases like “Your cart misses you” can read as silly. A simple message that shows the items, answers the obvious question (shipping, returns, stock) and gives a way to reply works better. If an item is low in stock, say so only if it is true.
What to put in the email
- The items left in the cart, with images, names and prices.
- One button back to the cart.
- One line on shipping or delivery timing for the holidays.
- The sale end date, if a sale applies.
- A reply-to address that reaches a person.
A short example email
Adapt it to your voice. Remove any line that is not true for your shop.

Hi {first name},
You left a few things in your cart, and we saved them for you:
[ Product image, name, price ]
Our Black Friday sale ({offer}) runs through {end date and time}. The items above are included, so the price in your cart should already reflect it.
Orders placed by {cutoff date} should arrive before {holiday}. If you have a question about sizing, shipping or returns, just reply to this email and a person will answer.
[ Return to my cart ]
{Shop name}
Test before the weekend
Put an item in your cart as a test customer, leave, and wait for the reminder to arrive. Check that the images load, the cart link works on a phone, and the sale price shows. Then check that the reminder does not collide with a campaign sent the same hour. For your main emails, see Black Friday email for Shopify store owners and the 2026 send schedule.
