Black Friday and holiday emails for independent pet stores

People spend on their pets the way they spend on family. An independent pet store has a real edge over the big chains: you know the animals, the food and the owners by name. Your holiday emails should sound like that.

Two kinds of sales: the routine and the gift

A pet store sells two very different things in November and December. The first is the routine: food, litter, treats, flea and tick products, which people buy every few weeks no matter the season. The second is the gift: toys, beds, bandanas, stockings, treat boxes, and gifts for the pet owner. Mix them up in one email and you confuse both. Keep them separate.

The routine sale is about convenience and loyalty. Customers who already buy food from you are the most valuable people on your list, and a holiday email can protect that habit with something like “stock up before the weather turns” or a free treat with a bag of food. The gift sale is about delight: a toy the dog will tear apart on Christmas morning, a stocking for the cat.

Write for the pet and the person

Name the animal in your emails. “For the dog who chews everything,” “for the senior cat,” “for the puppy’s first Christmas,” and “for the person who talks to their parrot” all do more work than “pet gifts.” Segment if your email tool allows it: dog people and cat people react differently, and sending cat toys to a dog household teaches them to ignore you.

The five emails

  1. Early access to the holiday shop and food stock-up (the week before Black Friday). Introduce toys, treats and stockings, and let loyal customers know about food and supply bundles first. If you carry fresh, frozen or specialty food, say what you have in stock so people don’t drive over for nothing.
  2. Black Friday: one offer that rewards regulars. Examples that suit pet stores: a free treat or toy with a bag of food, a percentage off a toy and treat bundle, or a punch-card style “buy five bags of food, get the sixth free” for customers who shop with you often. Pick one and name the dates. Watch your margins on food, which is often thin; discount toys and accessories more generously.
  3. Small Business Saturday: meet the shop. Introduce the people and the shop pets. A real photo of the store cat or a regular customer’s dog does more than a coupon. Add an invitation to come in for a treat bar or a free nail trim if you offer one. Examples.
  4. The gift guide: for pets, and for people who love pets (early December). Stocking stuffers by animal, plus gifts for the owner: mugs, calendars, leashes, ornaments. Add treat-making or pet-safe holiday items if you carry them.
  5. Last day: holiday hours, pickup, and a heads-up on food stock. Nobody plans to run out of cat food on December 24th, but it happens. Remind people of your holiday hours, curbside pickup and local delivery, and gift cards. Last-day template.
