Black Friday and holiday emails for home decor and candle shops
Candles and home decor are among the easiest gifts to give and the hardest to choose online, because nobody can smell a photo. Your holiday emails have to do the sniffing for the customer: describe the scent, name the room, and make the set the easy answer.
Sell scents and rooms, not product names
A shopper looking at “Hearth No. 4” learns nothing. A shopper reading “woodsmoke, cedar and a little orange peel, the one that makes a living room smell like the first cold night” can already picture it. In every email, give each candle or diffuser one sensory line and one place to use it: entryway, bathroom, kitchen, desk. Decor works the same way. “A 12-inch ceramic vase” is a size; “the vase that holds three grocery-store branches and looks intentional” is a reason to buy.
Fragrance is also personal, which is why gift sets and “if you’re not sure” picks do so much work for a shop like yours. Many gift buyers are afraid of choosing a scent the recipient will dislike. Take that fear away with a few sentences on how to choose: a soft, clean scent for the person you don’t know well, something warm and spiced for the person who loves a cozy house, and a gift card for everyone else.
The five emails
- Early access to the holiday scents and sets (the week before Black Friday). Show the seasonal collection and the gift sets first, to your list only. If a scent or a set is limited, say how many you poured or made. This is the email that tells your best customers to shop before the rush.
- Black Friday: one clear offer. The strongest offers in this category are simple: a percentage off a gift set, a free travel candle or tin with orders over a set amount, or a “buy two, save” on your core scents. Pick one. Name the dates and the end time.
- Small Business Saturday: how it’s made. People who buy candles care about the pour: where you make them, what wax and wicks you use, how many you pour in a batch. A short, real behind-the-scenes email is far more persuasive than another discount. See Small Business Saturday examples.
- Hostess gifts and the home-for-the-holidays guide (early December). Hostess gifts, teacher gifts, secret Santa, and “for the person hosting twelve people.” Group them by price, and add a line on gift wrap.
- Last day to ship, and the late-order options. Candles and glass are heavy and breakable, so your cutoff is usually earlier than a lightweight shop’s. Put the date in the subject, then offer pickup, local delivery and gift cards for people who miss it. Last-day-to-ship template.
What to put in a candle or decor shop’s emails
- Scent notes in plain words, not a list of oils. “Fresh-cut pine, a little vanilla” beats a technical note chart.
- Burn time and size, because shoppers compare. A line like “about 50 hours” is only worth including if you have tested it, so state it only when it is true for your product.
- Safety and care in one sentence: trim the wick, never leave it burning unattended. It looks careful and builds trust.
- Pet and allergy notes where relevant: some customers will want to know about fragrance-free or lightly scented options.
- Gift-ready packaging: show the box, the ribbon, the card. Gifts that arrive ready to hand over sell.
- Shipping dates that reflect fragile goods, including what you do if something arrives broken.
Two things that quietly help
Build sets in advance. A “Cozy Night” set of a candle, matches and a small dish, or a “Host” set of two votives, is easier to buy than three separate decisions. Sets also raise the order size without a discount.
Do not discount everything. Marking down the whole store in November teaches customers to wait for the next sale. A single doorbuster plus a bonus on larger orders protects the prices on the rest of your range.
